  • Chapter Art: The One in which Cassandra Milks a Cow
“”Rise and shine!” he suddenly yelled as he banged on a pail. Celia gave him a disapproving glare and turned her big head away from him. Up in the loft, Cassandra sat upright, instantly awake. Bits of hay stuck to her hair and shirt. “Time for chores!” Ben yelled at her. He wouldn’t turn her in to be Burned, but he’d be damned if he didn’t get some honest work out of her. It was the least she could do.

    Dear Readers,

Of all the weird things I’ve gotten to research, milking a cow is definitely one of the oddest. Enjoy this chapter art for Chapter 8: The One in which Cassandra Milks a Cow.

    Thanks for reading!

  • Coming Soon: The Things on the Wall

Don’t miss the next chapter in Hope in Ruins, The Things on the Wall. Out this week.

Don’t remember the Wall? Check out these chapters:

  • Out Now: The Wall
“The field stretches west to the horizon and the setting sun, a great emptiness. There are no trees to hide behind, no bushes or buildings, just long waving grass. In fall, the grass withers and dries and shivers in the wind. Red leaves from the wood scuttle across the openness. And then, to the east, you see it for the first time, and you understand fear. Running through this great and awful field is the Wall.

The Wall, the latest chapter in Hope in Ruins, is out now.

  • Chapter Art: Re-Incarnate Day, the Kiln, and the Hand
“At the far end of the square, in front of the Health Center, were dozens of cathode-ray tube, or CRT displays, all set for viewing the festivities. The CRTs were more like large, heavy boxes than anything else, but they worked. They sat on the stage, stacked high on top of each other so that everyone could see. The many displays all showing the same thing always made Ben think of a spider eye, all multifaceted and shining.

    Dear Reader,

This is one of my favorite images for Hope in Ruins. Enjoy this chapter art for Chapter 7: Re-Incarnate Day, the Kiln, and the Hand.

    As always, thanks for reading!

    Dear Readers,

This is chapter art for Chapter 6: The Meaning of Hammer and Nails. This image, a mother clutching a hammer and watching her children flee, captured my imagination, sparked large parts of this story, and inspired characters. I hope you enjoy this local artist’s interpretation of that moment as much as I do.

    Thanks for reading!

  • Out Now: Dumpsters in West One
“”He tried to sneak over the Wall. And Loraine turned him inside out.” Mica squealed…
It had always been something new when Viola had told the story—inside out, fried, burned to a crisp, mashed to a pulp, exploded. Mica had never gotten the same story out of Viola twice, and somehow they always seemed like cooking stories gone horribly wrong. But every once and a while, someone else would turn up and confirm the tall tales. Someone who had seen the body or had smelled the sizzling flesh would pop up and say they had known the poor bastard who had tried to jump the Wall. May he rest in peace.

Mica has made it this far, all the way to West One, but what will they find inside the city? And are the stories about the Wall really true?

  • Coming Soon: Dumpsters in West One

“Her heart refused to quiet itself as she tried to decipher what she had just seen. What had Ben done to the young woman and the boy? His eyes had glowed a different color, not Watcher gold, not the deep, dark, shadowed blue of restoration, but blue-green like water in sunshine.

Don’t miss the next chapter in Hope in Ruins: The One in which Mica Drives Backwards. Poorly. Read it now.

  • Out Soon: The One in Which Mica Drives Backwards. Poorly.

Follow Mica and Ben as they start their journey east to Windrose City. But time is running out, and Windrose City is hundreds of miles away…

  • Chapter Art: Plans in the Dark

“They had played in this fort as children, pretending they were explorers searching the White Mountains for the Unseen City, the city said to be free from the Eternal Mother, Loraine and the General Eternal, Rufus. There were no Watchers there, no soldiers, no Burnings, or Adjustments, or so the stories said.
It wasn’t true, of course. Soon enough, children learned the city was not real and was only a lie.

    Dear Readers,

I absolutely love this image for Chapter 5: Plans in the Dark.

“For the past three nights, the vision of the dying man had been sharper and brighter and in more detail than ever before, but each time it ended with darkness. This time she saw a fountain. And the fountain terrified her. It filled her with a sense of finality and dread. That fountain meant it was over. She wasn’t sure how she knew that, but she did.

  • Out Now: Eyes and Spies in the Empty Places
“There was nothing unusual about him, this lanky, sullen-looking boy with a weak chin. He would make a good spy—able to blend and disappear, unnoticed and forgotten, as soon as seen. His eyes were vacant, but not the usual hazy, apathetic stare. There was something manufactured about his glassy eyes, and Mica knew that his mind was going faster and faster and taking in every detail and movement and crack he might slip into and use to his advantage.

Don’t miss the next chapter in Hope in Ruins. Mica is reunited with Ben, but their reunion doesn’t go how she expected. Ben isn’t what she expected.

“Having no other choice, Mara looked up and met the stranger’s eyes. He was a small man with a pale face and hazy gray eyes like he’d been staring too long at nothing, and now his unfocused eyes saw everything and nothing. And he was very thin. His limbs were like spider legs, small and delicate, yet she could tell they were strong. He stood very still. That stillness though, was not empty, not inactive, or stagnant, but it was a coiled, spring stillness.

“In front of her, not far away, strode a flock of deer silhouetted in the almost sunrise. Mica caught her breath. Something about their long legs casting spindly shadows and their twitching tails filled her with warmth.
“There, see? It’s nothing,” Rebekah said. But Mica caught something sad in her voice.
    “No. Not nothing.”
Rebekah motioned to them. “Just stupid deer. They don’t know anything.”
    “Doesn’t make them nothing.”

  • Thieves and Friends Chapter Art
Cassandra. Chapter art for Chapter 2: Thieves and Friends.

    Hi Readers,

This week I am pleased to post my favorite piece conceptual of chapter art: Cassandra. This image was created by a local artist for Chapter 2: Thieves and Friends, and is by far my favorite.

When the artist showed me this piece, I had an epiphany: that’s it! This image encapsulated so much of what I wanted to say without a single word and lead to the creation of Eyes, Fire, and Ash, and then to the images you now see as chapter art.

    Enjoy!

Could all the delicately painted pictures, the vibrant tattoos, and all the good he had done for her ever make up for her mother’s death? Maybe, maybe not. She wondered if it was even a fair question. Peter was Peter, and she had loved him. She hoped to one day find him and get some answers.

She had helped him get started in the West Six Black Market, introducing him to Viola and telling her what a talented and wonderful artist Peter was. She had never asked about his past.
While she did everything she could to take care of those she loved, she had always known that it was up to her to keep them all safe and that no one would take care of her…”

    Hi readers!

A while back, I commissioned chapter art for Hope in Ruins from a local artist. This is the art for Chapter 25: Eyes, Fire, and Ash. I loved working with this artist, explaining my vision, and seeing the final product turn out even more amazing than what I originally envisioned. While writing Hope in Ruins has been mostly a solo effort, working with an artist was a definite highlight. I can’t wait to post more of these amazing images, and hope you enjoy the chapter art as much as I do!

“When we were drowning… under the river. I saw your eyes glow. That was how I found you in the dark.”
Ben remembered that feeling, that watery, pulsing feeling, under the river. “What the hell is happening to me?” he asked, terrified. Fear smelled like sweat and unwashed clothes and incense. The thought of restoring memories and… whatever this was, was too much. He already felt enough of a freak with his leg. This just wasn’t fair.
